After World War II, young veteran Paul Sutton meets a frightened pregnant woman who is unmarried and afraid her father will disown her. Hoping to help her face her family, he agrees to pretend to be her husband, even though he is already married. What begins as a desperate arrangement between strangers grows more complicated as Paul and the young woman spend time together and develop feelings for each other.
