After being convicted of witchcraft, 8-year-old Shula is taken from her ordinary childhood and sent to a penal colony. There, she is made to live among other women labeled as witches, all forced into hard labour in service of the government. As Shula enters this harsh system, her life becomes defined by punishment, control and the burden of a belief imposed on her.
