In a future Japan, an outbreak of canine flu prompts the mayor of a Japanese city to exile every dog to a garbage-dump island. Among the outcast animals, life changes when a 12-year-old boy arrives in search of his lost and beloved pet, setting the dogs and the boy on a dangerous trek across the island.
