During World War II, twelve-year-old Soviet orphan Ivan Bondarev serves the Soviet army as a scout, moving behind German lines despite his young age. In the midst of wartime danger and isolation, he forms a bond with three sympathetic Soviet officers, who come to know the boy behind the mission as he carries out his perilous work.
