In the years before World War II, Nitta Sayuri is taken from her poor fishing-village family and sent to work as a maid in a geisha house. Far from the life she knew, the young Japanese girl begins a difficult rise through a world of strict traditions and expectations, eventually becoming one of Japan’s most celebrated geisha.
