Veteran anchorman Howard Beale is pushed out of his 25-year post because of his age, but his farewell takes a shocking turn when he tells viewers he plans to kill himself on air. After his unstable on-screen tirades send ratings soaring, the television network sees an opportunity and begins exploiting his ravings about mass media for profit, even as his message becomes harder to contain.
