Henri “Papillon” Charriere, a safecracker from the Parisian underworld, is wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to life in the notorious penal colony of French Guiana. There, he forms an unlikely bond with Louis Dega, a quirky convicted counterfeiter who needs his protection. Together, the two inmates look for a way to survive their brutal imprisonment and attempt an escape from Devil’s Island.
