In 1971 Alexandria, Virginia, high-school football is at the heart of the community. When the school board integrates an all-Black school with an all-White one, the tradition surrounding the game is shaken. Successful coach Bill Yoast is demoted and replaced by Herman Boone, a tough and outspoken leader with a very different style. Together, they must face their differences and guide a divided team.
