Set in the international world of Western classical music, the film follows Lydia Tar, a celebrated composer-conductor regarded as one of the greatest living figures in her field. As the first female director of a major German orchestra, she begins rehearsals for a career-defining symphony, while the consequences of past choices start to surface in her present life.
