Walter Black, a troubled husband and toy company executive, is struggling with severe depression and unable to connect with the people closest to him. In an attempt to express himself, he begins speaking through a beaver hand puppet, making it his only means of communication. As Walter tries to reach his family in this unusual way, his adolescent son Porter becomes increasingly convinced that his parents should divorce.
