In postwar Italy, seven-year-old Amerigo lives with his impoverished family in Naples. When a relief initiative offers children a chance to stay with wealthier families in the north, his mother makes the painful decision to send him away. As Amerigo boards the train and leaves home behind, he begins to glimpse a different life beyond the poverty he has always known.
