In 1920s Vienna, Christmas Eve brings an unusual visit for young Mary and her brother when their eccentric uncle Albert arrives with a special gift: a magical wooden nutcracker. After the doll comes to life, Mary is drawn into a fantasy world where the wonder of the holiday gives way to a battle against the evil Rat King.
