Noemi, the studious and devout daughter of a prominent rabbi, persuades her father to delay her arranged marriage for one year so she can study at a Jewish seminary for women in the ancient Kabalistic seat of Safe. There, she and another brilliant young woman begin to discover their own voices within a repressive orthodox culture where women are forbidden to sing, let alone speak out.
