Jack Gladney, a professor of Hitler studies at The-College-on-the-Hill, lives with his wife, Babette, and their four children and stepchildren as they navigate the ordinary conflicts of contemporary American family life. When a chemical spill from a rail car triggers an Airborne Toxic Event, Jack is forced to face his deepest fear: his own mortality, along with larger questions of love, death, and happiness in an uncertain world.
