Therapist Dr. Paul Weston spends season one treating a demanding group of patients, including a woman who has developed feelings for him, a scarred U.S. Air Force pilot, a suicidal teenage gymnast, and a couple close to breaking up. As their sessions unfold, Paul begins to question his own abilities and turns back to his former therapist, whom he has not seen in ten years.
